Know Before You Go

Do you need to bring an electronic device? That is completely up to you! If you have a device, you will be able to view the session schedule and room assignments on our website and each session will have a Google Doc available for crowd-sourced note taking. We also want to make sure you are aware that there will be some items in our Makerspace that use electronic devices. For a more enhanced experience in the Makerspace, bring a charged device with you.

When you arrive: Windermere Preparatory School is undergoing some upgrades, so we want to make sure you know where to go when you arrive. Please note the road map and marked parking location.

  • Once you have parked, please follow the signs to the gym. The gym will be the main gathering place for EdcampMagic.
  • When you arrive at the gym, please check in. We have some prizes and offers that will only be emailed to participants who checked in at EdcampMagic.
  • If you ordered an EdcampMagic t-shirt, pick it up at the t-shirt table.
  • If you are new to Edcamps (and many of you are), make sure you check out the “Newbie” table where veteran edcampers will be available to answer your questions.
  •
Food options available: Thanks to our sponsors, Puppet Pals, Windermere Preparatory School, itslearning, and Bulb Digital Portfolios, we are able to provide the following food options free of charge to participants.

    • Breakfast will include donuts, fruit, coffee, and juice. Grab something when you arrive and make some new friends while you wait for the fun to start.
    • Lunch will include Papa John’s pizza, salad, and drinks. After Session 2 has wrapped up, return to the gym and continue the conversations over lunch.
    • If you are on a special diet, please plan accordingly. We are not able to provide different options for dietary restrictions, but we would be happy to refrigerate your lunch, if you need to bring other food to accommodate your diet.
Please help us thank these sponsors for supporting your day of learning by tweeting a thank you to @polishedplay, @WPS_Lakers, @itslearning and @bulbapp!

    The Story Behind the Shirt

Edcamps are different from the kinds of professional development experienced in most school districts. Edcamps put YOU in charge of your learning. Choice is the theme from the very beginning of the day. You CHOOSE whether or not you want to attend an Edcamp, it isn't forced upon you. At the beginning of the day, sessions are decided based upon what the participants CHOOSE to learn about that day. Anyone who wants to initiate a discussion on a topic can CHOOSE a time and space on one of the boards. You CHOOSE which sessions will benefit you the most and, if you happen to go to a session that isn't what you thought it would be, you are free to CHOOSE to leave and go to a different session.

Continuing on the theme of choice, and playing off the fact that Walt Disney World's Toy Story Land is scheduled to open at the end of June, the 2018 EdcampMagic T-shirt was designed to playfully show everyone that EdcampMagic is your "CHOSEN" Professional Development. We hope you are making the choice to share in this magical day of learning, and look forward to learning with you! Order your EdcampMagic t-shirt today!

    Meet Brian Collins

We are excited to announce that former Walt Disney Imagineer, Brian Collins will be joining us for a magical day of learning at EdcampMagic on June 9th! In addition to being a former Walt Disney Imagineer, Brian is also a passionate educator who has served on the faculty of several schools and is known for developing innovative approaches to education. Brian is looking forward to learning with everyone at EdcampMagic 2018! You can learn more about Brian here.

Here’s To The Ones Who Dream… by Debbie Fucoloro

This Saturday, June 10, 2017, the third #EdcampMagic will convene. How is EdcampMagic different than other edcamps? EdcampMagic was founded by a group of educators who are inspired by Walt Disney and who dreamt up the idea of holding an edcamp at Walt Disney World while chatting on Twitter one night. Like the Robert John Meehan quote, above, when you attend any edcamp, you will find ‘teachers who uplift you, whose presence inspire you and whose dedication drives you.’ At all edcamps, amazing participants come together to learn and become better educators for our students, the future of the world. We come together to learn and discuss how to inspire another generation of humans to use their talents and skills to make the world a better place, and most importantly, at EdcampMagic we come together to dream. The difference between regular edcamps and EdcampMagic is that we are a ‘destination’ edcamp. We have people attending from all over the country as well as outside of the USA. We come together to celebrate the creativity, innovation and the art of storytelling that Walt Disney embodied and inspired.

    Dream . . .

Lately, I have been inspired by the idea of bringing together diverse groups to solve problems. In other words, knocking down silos and celebrating the the talents, skills, and perspectives others can bring to the table. This theme has been explored in a variety of media. Here are a few of my favorites:

    Tomorrowland:

Though not a perfect film, I was inspired by the ending in a way no other film has touched me. Long story short, we can make a difference in the world. We all have talents, and we need to develop and use them to make the world a better place. The film ends as a new group of people scour the Earth for the next generation of dreamers. These new problem solvers included a street musician, mechanical engineer, zoologist, urban gardener, judge, sidewalk artist, mathematician, wind farm engineer, ballerina, chemist, and hiker. I loved that the new problem solvers were such a diverse group with such a diverse set of talents and skills. https://youtu.be/2pXlMUyH9gs

The Medici Effect by Frans Johansson

This book was recommended to me by Rebecca Hare. I love it because it celebrates and encourages ‘...people from different fields coming together to find a place for their ideas to meet, collide, and build on each other.’

    LA LA LAND

Audition: The Fools Who Dream, could be an anthem for the maker movement. It's certainly celebrating 'fools who dream.' The next line, 'Who knows where it will lead us? And that's why they need us.' YES! All of this talk of dreams and bringing together diverse people to allow their ideas to meet, collide, and build on each other is what we need more of in education! Makerspaces can provide the gateway into schools and hopefully, eventually the entire culture of the school begins to change...'Who knows where it will lead us? And that's why they need us!'

EdcampMagic is a labor of love for the EdcampMagic Edmagineers. We had the courage to dream of holding an edcamp at Walt Disney World, and here we are, on the eve of our third EdcampMagic! We have many people and organizations who have supported us, and to those people, we say, THANK YOU! Most of all, we thank the EdcampMagic participants who have overwhelmed us with their excitement, creativity, and encouragement.

This Saturday, June 10, 2o17, we hope EdcampMagic participants bring their curiosity with them. We hope participants are inspired and uplifted by each other. Most of all, we hope each and every participant leaves with the courage to dream about how to inspire their students.

Do You Want to Stay and Play?

The EdcampMagic team has been working hard to create special opportunities for edcamp participants. Disney has offered us discounted rates for Disney's Port Orleans Riverside for EdcampMagic 2016. Several of the team, including myself, stayed here for last year's edcamp. One of the things I most enjoyed about my stay was the water boat access to Disney Springs, formerly called Downtown Disney. It was a great alternative to riding the busses! So, if you want to stay on Disney property and would like a little nicer place to stay than the value resorts, but without paying a lot more for it, check out the lodging information.
